Roky Erickson, The Spits, Black Lips, Lover!, Gris Gris, The Dirtbombs, Davila 666, Strange Boys… I never gave a shit about Portland, but the Scion Garage Fest this October made me a little jealous of those west-coast granola-eaters. Luckily, Jack of Heart, who performed @ Scion with these psyche/ garage legends, returned to France shortly after the (what else!) Vice-sponsored Portland bash. The boys were joined in Paris by Magnetix and Left Lane Cruiser, also made in France, also turning out garage-y rock & some pop.

For dudes that just landed from a seemingly hectic US tour, the band certainly wasn’t lacking in energy. But if you waited 3 years to turn out your debut LP, you probably want to bring the party to the record release party.

Master-mind of JoH Piero Ilov (previously with Demon’s Claws and others) understands that a good party is really nothing without booze and a stripper. He de-robed to reveal a fish-net body-suit and looked like one hot piece of tuna, caught fresh from the Atlantic. I really wish more men would objectify themselves onstage (particularly in nautically-inspired garb).

If I was deaf, I certainly would gage the level of enjoyment at a show by sweat-gleaming chest hair, and this one was up there. (No one, however, can touch Monotonix. I made my friend go see them on this merit alone; the display, he said, “was truly impressive.” Truer words were never spoken, my friend.)

The self-titled Born Bad record is probably at a record store near you, and probably merits a weeks’ worth of milk money. I would have got it at the show, but I uhm, sort of forgot. And when I saw it at Born Bad next day, I realized my parents cut off milk-money, like, 15 years ago. But if I was more sober and wealthier, well, I don’t think I can finish that thought... Yes, Piero, I’m thinking about where I can buy a fish-net body suit, instead.
